Castelfranco di Sopra in the province of Arezzo is situated in the Pratomagno side of
the Valdarno (the valley of the river Arno, that continues on to Florence), at a height of
281 meters above sea level. The village was founded at the end of the 13th century in a
strategic location for the control of passing commercial trade and for military dominance
of the surrounding area.
It's layout, attributed to
Arnolfo di Cambio is a central square with straight and parallel streets
enclosed by surrounding walls.Gatehouse towers were constructed at the end of the two main
streets with a series of towers at intervals along the perimeter
In the course of the centuries Castelfranco di Sopra has not suffered great changes
within its walls, although only a small section of its external walls has survived,
therefore little has been lost of the artistic legacy and the
fascinating countryside remains.
This is a place where the art is in harmony with the beauty of the hillsides, the color
of the olive groves and the fantastic forms of the sandstone crags (Balze).
Situated only a short distance from Arezzo, Siena and Firenze,a world of art, history
and tradition awaits the curious and unhurried traveller.
Have a nice trip!
