As soon as you arrive at Castelfranco di Sopra you cannot help but admire the
splendid
gatehouse tower that welcomes your arrival. It is the
most visible part of the remains of the castle founded by
the city of Florence. The tower construction history is not
known but it seams certain that it was designed by Arnolfo
di Cambio a famous Florentine architect. The tower has been
subject to several modifications and restorations, in the
first part of the 1500 a clock
was set into the external wall, in 1610 a tiled roof was
added to cover the flat roof of the tower, the aspect of the
tower changed significantly however this tiled roof was
later removed. On the side of the gate you can still see a
section of the old
castle wall , which has remained in very good condition.
In 1996 Castelfranco di Sopra celebrated the 700th
anniversary of its foundation by once again restoring the so
called “Torre di Arnolfo” now considered the symbol of
the village. Climbing to the top of the tower you can admire
the
bell and the
surrounding countryside with Castelfranco di Sopra at
the foot of the Tuscan Alps.
